Director General of Income Tax of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry set up a 24 x 7 Control Room


In the wake of the State Legislative Assembly General Election – 2021 to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Bye Election to Kanyakumari Parliamentary Constituency to be held on 6th April 2021, the Election Commission of India has sought the assistance of the Directorate General of the Income Tax (Investigations) to monitor election expenditure. 

The role of the Directorate is to provide assistance to ensure free and transparent fair elections by controlling the role played by unaccounted funds in the election process, stated a press release issued by the Additional Director of Income Tax (Inv.), Unit-2, Chennai Nodal Officer, Election Expenditure Monitoring.

To achieve this objective, the Investigation Directorate will take proactive steps to discover and seize unaccounted funds intended to be utilized for electioneering, the release said.

As a part of this initiative, the Director-General of Income Tax (Investigation), Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has set up a 24 x 7 Control Room with a Toll-free number, designated fax and facility of email and WhatsApp to receive complaints/information from the public.

PM inaugurates and lays foundation stone of various development projects in Puducherry


Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for 4 laning of NH45-A covering Karaikal District and Medical College Building at Karaikal New Campus- Phase I, Karaikal District (JIPMER). 

He also laid the foundation stone for the development of Minor Port at Puducherry under Sagarmala Scheme and Synthetic Athletic Track, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Puducherry.

Mr Modi inaugurated the Blood Centre at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Puducherry and a 100-bed girls' hostel at Lawspet, Puducherry for female athletes. He also inaugurated the reconstructed Heritage Marie Building.

The Prime Minister said Puducherry has been home to sages, scholars and poets and also to revolutionaries like Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi and Sri Aurobindo. Admiring Puducherry as a symbol of diversity, he said here people speak different languages, practice different faiths but live as one.

Inaugurating the re-built Mairie Building, the Prime Minister said that the building will add to the beauty of Beach Promenade and attract more tourists.

The Prime Minister said that four laning of NH 45-A would cover Karaikal District and improve the connectivity to the holy Saneeswaran Temple and also provide easy interstate connectivity to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health and Nagor Dargah. He said the Government has made several efforts to improve rural and coastal connectivity and the agriculture sector will gain from this. He said that it is the obligation of the Government to ensure their produce reaches good markets in a timely manner and good roads would aid in achieving that goal. He further stated that the four laning of the road will also add momentum to the economic activity in this area and generate job opportunities for local youth.

The Prime Minister remarked that in the last seven years, India has made many efforts to improve fitness and wellness as economic prosperity is closely linked to good health. In this context, he laid the foundation stone for the 400 meters synthetic athletic track at the sports complex, as a part of the Khelo India scheme. It will nurture sporting talent among the youth of India. He remarked that with the coming of good sports facilities to Puducherry, youth from this state can excel in national and global sports meets. He said the 100-bed girls' hostel constructed at Lawspet inaugurated today would accommodate hockey, volleyball, weightlifting kabaddi and handball players who would be trained under SAI coaches.

The Prime Minister said that healthcare would play a key role in the coming years. In line with the objective of providing quality health care to all, Blood Centre in JIPMER is being inaugurated, which will accommodate advanced facilities for long term storage of blood, blood products and stem cells banking. He added that the facility will function as a research laboratory and a training centre for personnel training in all aspects of transfusion.

The Prime Minister said, to promote quality healthcare, we need quality health professionals. Phase-I project of Medical College Building at Karaikal New Campus is an environment friendly complex and will have all modern teaching facilities required for teaching MBBS students.

Laying the foundation of Puducherry Port Development under Sagarmala Scheme, the Prime Minister hoped that once completed, it will help the fishermen who have been using this port for venturing into the sea for fishing operations. It will provide much-needed sea connectivity to Chennai. This will facilitate the cargo movement for industries of Puducherry and ease the load on the Chennai port. It will open up possibilities of passenger traffic among the coastal cities, he said.

The Prime Minister said Direct Benefit Transfer has helped beneficiaries under various welfare schemes. He said this makes people empowered for making their choices. He stated that Puducherry has got rich human resources because of various educational institutions present, both in the government and private sector. It has potential for a lot of industrial and tourism development that will provide a lot of employment and opportunity. "The people of Puducherry are talented. This land is beautiful. I am here to personally assure all possible support from my Government for the development of Puducherry," the Prime Minister concluded.

Congress Government loses majority in Puducherry


The V Narayanasamy led Congress government in Puducherry today lost the majority in the floor test today.

The decision to conduct the floor test was announced by the newly appointed Lieutenant-Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on the 18th of February after the Opposition stated that the ruling party no longer enjoys a majority on the floor. 

Recently, there have been resignations from the ruling party which created political turmoil in Puducherry.

Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan sworn in as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

Telangana Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan was sworn in as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry yesterday. She will be handling this portfolio in addition to Governor of Telangana. 

Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Sanjib Banerjee administered the oath of office to her at a function held at the Raj Nivas. Dr Tamilisai took the oath in Tamil. 

She tweeted that,

"Felt Proud & Happy to take the Oath of Office in My mother tongue - Tamil as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry at RajNivas today".

After assuming office, Lt Governor signed on the file relating to the welfare of Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries in lieu of Clothing Material & Grant-in-Aid for AIDS Control Society.

Chief Minister and Opposition leaders called on the Lt. Governor at her official residence. 

After taking oath, Chief Secretary & DGP  called on Lieutenant Governor and briefed on Administration, currentaffairs ,Law and Order of Puducherry. 

Later in the day, Dr Tamilisai visited the Indira Gandhi Government Hospital at Puducherry & highlighted the importance of vaccination & requested FrontlineWarriors to come forward to take vaccines without Hesitancy, fear & motivate others.

Congress Government to face floor test in Puducherry


The V Narayanasamy led Congress government in Puducherry will face a floor test on Monday (22nd February 2021).

The decision was announced by the newly appointed Lieutenant-Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan today.

According to the Opposition, the ruling party no longer enjoys majority on the floor, which has necessitated the floor test. 

Recently, there have been resignations from the ruling party which has created a political turmoil in Puducherry.

Union Government approves Rs 3,113.05 crore of additional Central Assistance to five States/Union Territories

Union government has approved the central assistance under the NDRF fund to five states.

The High-Level Committee (HLC) under the Chairmanship of the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, has approved additional Central Assistance of Rs. 3,113.05 crore under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to five states, which were affected by floods/ cyclones (Nivar and Burevi)/ Pest attack during 2020. 

While approving the additional Central Assistance, the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah said the Union Government under the leadership of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has resolved to help the people of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Madhya Pradesh who braved these natural disasters.

The details are as follows:

1. Andhra Pradesh - Rs. 280.78 crore for floods during South West Monsoon-2020
2. Bihar - Rs 1,255.27 crore for floods during South West Monsoon-2020
3. Tamil Nadu - Rs 63.14 crore for Cyclone ‘Nivar -2020’ and Rs 223.77 crore for Cyclone ‘Burevi-2020’. Total of Rs. 286.91 crore
4. Union Territory of Puducherry - Rs 9.91 crore for Cyclone ‘Nivar -2020’
5. Madhya Pradesh - Rs 1,280.18 crore for Pest Attack during Kharif-2020

In addition during the financial year 2020-21, the Central Government has released Rs 19 036.43 crores to 28 States from the State Disaster Risk Management Fund (SDRMF) and Rs 4,409.71 crore to 11 States from National Disaster Risk Management Fund.

Kiran Bedi pulls up Puducherry Cricket Association

Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Dr Kiran Bedi has taken up the matter of allegations obtained under an RTI about the construction of Seichem Cricket Stadium in Thutipet in violation of law by encroaching GP lands, water bodies and sinking borewells without permission of Water Bodies authority. 

Writing a letter regarding the same to Puducherry District Collector Dr Arun, the Lieutenant Governor said that taking note of the gravity of offences committed with impunity, the matter was immediately taken up with him.  

She wrote,

"Pursuant to the discussion held today you have accepted and conceded that you ought to have taken the following actions to prevent any continuing violations of law. And that you confirm, you shall take immediate remedial steps as per law. 

  1. Register an FIR for trespassing into Government lands and water bodies. 

  2. Directing the violator to stop any further activities in the premises until all matters are examined by the Departments concerned viz., Revenue Department, Puducherry Planning Authority, Ground Water Authority, Environment Department, Local Body, Electricity Department etc. 

  3. To ascertain whether the list of invitees had given their prior consent to participate in the inauguration of the T-20 Tournament. 

While you personally avoided attending the said inaugural function knowing of his credentials, you failed to caution the Office of the Lt. Governor on the bonafides of the person, who was insisting on my personal presence for the inauguration. 

As a Collector, it is your duty to ensure the dignity of the constitutional Office of the Lt. Governor.  

I am also bringing these illegal acts of Shri Damodadaran of Siachem Technologies to the notice of BCCI so that the sport of cricket is not harmed.”


KSRTC connects Puducherry


Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced that it will restart the interstate bus operations between Karnataka and Puducherry state from 23rd October 2020.

Puducherry gets new infrastructure

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari dedicated to Nation via video conference mode a one-kilometre long Road-Over-Bridge across Railway Level Crossing on NH 45-A at Arumparthapuram, Puducherry today. 

The Road-Over-Bridge worth Rs 35 crore will fulfil long awaited need of Puducherry, especially Villianur, Ariyur, Kandamangalam, Manaveli, Gorimedu, Arovil and Ariyankuppam areas. 

The event was attended by the Lt. Governor of the UT of Puducherry Dr. Kiran Bedi, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and Union MoS-RTH Gen (Retd) Dr V K Singh, Ministers from the UT, Members of Parliaments, MLAs and senior officers from the Centre and the State.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gadkari said, the project is envisaged to bring relief to public from traffic jam resulting in saving of time and fuel, safe commutation, reduction in pollution, closure of level crossing, and unhindered passage of railway traffic. He said, four-laning of NH-45 shall provide unhindered connectivity of Puducherry with Karaikal port as well as ECR road which is leading upto Kanyakumari. 

This will also give impetus to the agriculture and fishing. He said, Rs 70 crore has been spent on NH construction during the last six years in the UT of Puducherry.

Schools to reopen in Tripura, Puducherry from today

Schools in Tripura and Puducherry will be reopened from today after the long COVID-19 induced break. 

All the government and its aided schools of Tripura would be reopened from today. Students from Class 9 to 12 can attend schools to consult with teachers about their subject-related queries. However, they need to get written consent of their parents first. Fifty per cent of teachers would attend schools on a rotation basis every day. 

Meanwhile, the classes will start in Puducherry only from October 8th. Preparation for commencing the classes including sanitising of the premises and arranging other COVID-19 centric amenities will be done starting from today before the classes begin on 8th. 

Classes will be held for 9th,10th,11th and 12th standards only and that too with the written consent of parents. Also, attendance will not be taken.  

In order to maintain social distancing, students of class 9th and 10th will be having classes for three days in a week and students of class 11th and 12th will have classes for three days.
