Sonia Gandhi, Rahul return to India

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have returned to India today, reports stated.

Ms Gandhi, accompanied by her son, had left abroad for her routine follow up and medical check-up on 12th of September.

Both the leaders missed a major part of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament which started on 14th of September and is likely to end earlier than expected.

Sonia Gandhi leaves abroad for routine medical check-up

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday (12th September 2020) left abroad for her routine follow up and medical check-up. She is accompanied by Rahul Gandhi. 

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala informed about the same through a tweet,  "Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi is travelling today onwards for a routine follow up & medical check up, which was deferred due to the pandemic. She is accompanied by Sh. Rahul Gandhi. We take this opportunity to thank everyone for their concern & good wishes." 

According to reports, Party sources said that she will not be present during the monsoon session of parliament beginning Monday and will return in about two weeks. They are stated to have informed that Rahul Gandhi is likely to return in a week and would take part in the monsoon session of parliament on his return.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament will be held from September 14th to October 1st, 2020.

Special Committee formed to assist Congress President

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today formed a special committee to assist her in party matters. 

The committee includes AK Antony, Ahmed Patel, Ambika Soni, KC Venugopal, Mukul Wasnik and Randeep Singh Surjewala. 

Ms Gandhi has also reconstituted the working committee of the Party, with appointment of new members and relieving several senior leaders. 

The AICC Central Election Authority has also been reconstituted by the Congress President.

Congress appoints new General Secretaries, In-Charges; Ghulam Nabi Azad replaced

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed new General Secretaries and In-Charges for some states and Union Territories, a party release issued today said. 

According to the release, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, Moti Lal Vohra, Luizinho Faleiro and Mallikarjun Kharge have been relieved from the post of general secretaries. 

Mukul Wasnik has been appointed as General Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, Vivek Bansal has been appointed as In-charge of Haryana, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been appointed as General Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Harish Rawat has been appointed as General Secretary of Punjab and Randeep Surjewala has been appointed as the General Secretary of Karnataka, among other appointments.

Congress parliament strategy meet to be held today

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi will today come face to face with some of the leaders who wrote a letter calling for major leadership changes in the party, during a crucial parliament strategy meeting. 

This is the first meeting of Congress leaders after the last Congress Working Committee session, which was clouded by talks regarding the timing and intent of the letter. 

Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, who were among the 23 leaders who signed the letter will be a part of the meeting.

Sonia Gandhi forms panel to formulate stand of Congress on key ordinances

Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday (26th August) formed a five-member panel to formulate the stance of the party on key ordinances promulgated by the central government.

Party general secretary in charge of the organisation, KC Venugopal issued a press release stating that P Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh, Digvijaya Singh, Amar Singh and Gaurav Gogoi are the five members who constitute the panel.

Mr Ramesh will be the convener of the committee.

Sonia Gandhi holds virtual meet with CMs of 7 states

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi today convened a virtual meeting with the chief ministers of seven states to discuss various issues of national importance in the wake of the upcoming parliamentary session.  

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren participated in the meeting.

The topics which were discussed included Goods and Services Tax collection, National Education Policy 2020 and JEE and NEET exams, which are scheduled to be held in September.

Concerns were raised over the approach of Centre towards these issues and the participants suggested ways to counter it.

Sonia Gandhi to remain as Interim President of Congress for now, new chief to elected in 6 months

Sonia Gandhi will remain as the interim President of Congress party for now and the new chief will be elected within the next 6 months, according to reports.

The Congress Working Committee is stated to have arrived at this decision after a 7-hour long meeting. An intense discussion is reported to have occurred regarding a letter written by 23 members of the party, who are stated to have sought "changes to the leadership." 

Ms Gandhi reportedly offered to step down from the post but was asked to continue by former Prime Minister and party colleague Manmohan Singh.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi is said to have questioned the timing of the letter, when the party was undergoing a crisis in some states and considering the health condition of Ms Gandhi.

Most Congress workers want to see Rahul Gandhi leading the Party, says Sachin Pilot

Rajasthan Congress leader Sachin Pilot today said that most Congress workers would like to see Rahul Gandhi leading the Party. 

"Mrs Gandhi and Rahul ji have shown what it means to sacrifice for the greater good of the people and the party. Its now time to build consensus and consolidate. Our future is stronger when we’re united. Most Congress workers would like to see Rahul ji take over and lead the party," Mr Pilot  tweeted today. 

Mr Pilot was recently in news for his differences with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. However, he made peace with Mr Gehlot after a meeting with Mr Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
